Our Services

Fitness to Practise

Professional Disciplinary

At Johnson Astills we can assist in cases where you may find yourself appearing before your regulator for any range of fitness to practise related issues.  We appreciate that this can put your livelihood and professional reputation at stake and can be a very stressful time for you and those around you and that it is important that you act fast to mitigate the potential risks associated with your case.

With our experience and expertise in this specialist field, we can assist in preparing your case, gathering the necessary evidence, ensuring that the regulator complies with any disclosure issues, and preparing you for the hearing.  We can provide representation at the hearing itself, as well as at any Initial Case Management Hearings.

We can also assist with corresponding with your regulator to avoid your case progressing to a full hearing where possible.

Each case is unique and we provide a bespoke service for all of our clients. We are based in Leicestershire, with offices in Leicester and Loughborough, but can provide representation wherever your tribunal may take place in England or Wales.

Our professional defence solicitors are experienced litigators and advocates who will be able to identify and assess evidential and disclosure issues in your case and prepare your matter for the hearing. We can also offer advice and assistance with case preparation for those who wish to represent themselves.

Fixed fee options

We are unfortunately unable to provide representation for these matters through legal aid, but we can offer fixed fee options to suit your needs and payments in instalments where appropriate to assist you with covering the cost of your representation.

Professions that our team support

Medical Disciplinary Hearings

The medical profession is strictly regulated by official regulatory bodies that have the ability to investigate individuals or businesses that may breach legislation or regulations.

At Johnson Astills our team of professional defence solicitors act for doctors, nurses & midwives, dentists and other healthcare professionals who are not members of a Defence Union, or in some cases where the matter is not covered by a Union.  Our team can advise and defend those that may be under investigation or at risk of being prosecuted.

Doctors

We can represent doctors who have been referred by the General Medical Council (GMC) to a disciplinary hearing before the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS), for fitness to practice issues.

Nurses and Midwives

Like doctors, nurses and midwives accused of misconduct either related to performance, criminal convictions or findings by an alternative regulator, can find themselves the subject of disciplinary proceedings before the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Dentists

We provide representation for dentists who face hearings before the General Dental Council (GDC), at both full hearings before the Professional Conduct Committee, the Professional Performance Committee and the Health Committee, as well as before the Interim Orders Committee, who may impose restrictions on practice prior to a full hearing.

Other Healthcare Professionals

We are also able to provide representation to physiotherapists, radiographers, chiropodists, paramedics, social workers and more, who find themselves facing disciplinary hearings before a panel of the Health & Care Professions Committee.

Other Occupations

Solicitors & Barristers

We can provide advice and representation to solicitors under investigation by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and appearing before the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal and Barristers appearing before the Bar Standards Board.

Teachers

We can provide representation for teachers who are under investigation by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL).

Taxi Drivers

We can assist drivers who face disciplinary proceedings and the prospect of losing their licence before a licensing committee.

Students

Universities can sanction students following a negative finding by a disciplinary tribunal.  This can have far reaching effects on a student’s future.  Where appropriate we can assist with representation at University hearings, and where necessary with associated professional bodies for vocational students.

If your profession is not listed here and you face a hearing before your disciplinary body, please do not hesitate to get in touch, as we may still be able to represent you.
