Divorce Day 2025

What is Divorce Day?
It is believed that couples are more likely to end a relationship after spending the festive period together, therefore the first working Monday of the new year is referred to as ‘Divorce Day’. This year, Divorce Day will fall on Monday 6th January. According to media reports, family law specialists receive a higher number of calls and enquiries after the Christmas and New Year period.
Why is January so popular for divorces?
One suggestion is that there is a significant amount of stress on families at Christmas time, particularly financially. According to the Institute for Divorce Financial Analysis, 22% of all divorces are due to financial problems in the relationship. This issue can be particularly prevalent at Christmas, especially with the ongoing cost of living crisis in the UK.
Another suggestion for the rise in enquiries is that couples may choose to remain together over Christmas to avoid disruption to the family. Thereafter, once the festivities and distractions of Christmas fade away, couples may notice the faults in their relationship and ultimately come face to face with their struggling marriage.
Divorce Day is a term adopted by the media to highlight the number of new divorce applications made in the new year, but in reality divorces are issued all year round.
