The John Cornwell Award
The John Cornwell Award is an award given by Resolution and was first launched in 2003. The award was created to recognise a Resolution member or group of members who have gone the extra mile in their work to support separating families. The award recognises those ‘unsung heroes’ who go above and beyond to promote the Code of Practice and Resolution’s core value of a non-confrontational approach.
This year, Emma Mitchell, Solicitor/Partner within the Family Department at Emery Johnson Astills was shortlisted for this award due to her outstanding contribution to Collaborative law and being a member of Resolution.
Emma was appointed to the Standard’s Committee of Resolution in 2013 and has worked alongside the committee to drive the standards and expectations of Resolution forward. Emma was one of the first solicitors in Leicester to qualify in collaborative law in 2006 and has pioneered this further to include other collaborative lawyers in Leicester. Emma has been key in forming a “pod” of local collaborative lawyers who work together to raise and promote the profile of such work to other professionals and clients.
Unfortunately, Emma did not obtain the award this year but she did receive a special mention from the Chair of Resolution, Nigel Sheppard, at the awards dinner who said the following:
“We were overwhelmed by the quality of the nominations, and the panel wanted to mention one of those nominees here before we announce the winner. This person was one of the first in the country to qualify as a collaborative practitioner and since then has worked closely with local courts and firms in her area to promote the process. She recently handled a matter with a transgender father, whom she treated with sensitivity and professionalism.
Clients have said “she has the ability to see beyond the personal struggle and finds solutions when there appears to be none.” The member we would like to commend is Emma Mitchell, from Emery Johnson Astills in Leicester”
