Solicitor of the Year – Emma Mitchell

The Leicestershire Law Society Legal Awards is an evening dinner hosted by Ranjit Thaliwal, Leicester Law Society’s President which this year took place on Friday 9th May 2014 at Leicester’s Athena.

These awards are a fantastic opportunity to bring together members of the legal profession to appreciate and celebrate the hard work and achievement of some of Leicester’s leading lawyers. The awards are split into four categories with each category being sponsored by a local company, business or university. These are as follows;

  1. Solicitor of the Year sponsored by University of Leicester
  2. Junior Solicitor of the Year sponsored by De Montfort University
  3. Barrister of the Year sponsored by Wesleyan for Lawyers
  4. Law Firm of the Year sponsored by Handelsbanken

There was a shortlist of candidates in each category published in April 2014 and they were announced at a drinks reception at Mem-Saab in Leicester. A panel of carefully selected Judges, including District Judge Vera Stomencovich, and David Monk, an associate lecturer from University of Leicester, were then tasked with choosing a winner in each category.

It is with great pride that we can say that Emma Mitchel was awarded the Solicitor of the Year award, sponsored by the University of Leicester. Emma is a family law specialist and partner at Emery Johnson Astills, regularly praised by clients for her perceptive, understanding and sensitive approach to her work.

Other winners included Frances Proctor of Shakespeares for Junior Lawyer of the Year, Nassera Butt of No5 Chambers for Barrister of the Year and Weightmans LLP for law firm of the year.

Finally, for the first time there was to be a fifth award given, a Lifetime Achievement Award. This was presented to His Honour Judge Hammond who sits in Leicester Crown Court. His Honour Judge Hammond began his legal career as a legal clerk before moving to London to train and practise as a Solicitor. His Honour Judge Hammond practised in law and also sat as a Recorder in the East Midlands until 1993 when he became the first solicitor from the area to become a Circuit Judge. This award is truly deserved by His Honour Judge Hammond and we offer our congratulations to him.
