Neurodiversity Celebration Week

This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week.
Neurodiversity is a non-medical term used to describe a person whose brain forms, works, or functions differently to the typical brain.
Some of the most common types of neurodivergence are Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Dyslexia. Research suggests around 1 in 5 people are neurodivergent.
Society, including the legal system, is set up for people who are neurotypical. Unfortunately, neurodivergent people often face barriers that neurotypical people would never have to, particularly in relation to the law. Any legal matter is likely to cause distress, to any person, however this stress is amplified for neurodivergent people, if their individual needs are not understood or met, and if necessary, adjustments are not made.
Society risks preventing access to justice for neurodivergent people, by failing to understand the gravity of the struggles faced by neurodivergent individuals.
It is important that society, including law firms, learn to meet the needs of neurodivergent individuals.
Johnson Astills are an inclusive, supportive firm and all members of staff will aim to identify and meet the needs of any clients who may have difficulty using legal services. Johnson Astills endeavour to meet the needs of neurodivergent children and families and ensure their needs are met, by making reasonable adjustments in the way information and advice is shared.
It is important for neurodivergent clients to be aware that reasonable adjustments can be made during proceedings, and at Court, to ensure that information and legal advice is conveyed appropriately, potentially with the assistance of an Intermediary or Independent advocate.
If you require legal advice, please get in touch with Johnson Astills today and we would be more than happy to discuss your requirements further.
