FROM TODAY, motorists to face 3 points & a £100 fine for driving too close to cyclists
Following a Government review into bike safety, plans are to be announced by the Transport Minister in relation to motorists driving too close to cyclists. The rules are being brought in to encourage more people to use bikes and reduce accidents.
From today, motorists who drive too close to cyclists will be targeted for fines in a bid to make roads safer for bike users.
The Highway Code currently doesn’t state a minimum distance between cars and bikes and only instructs drivers to give ''plenty of room''. However, some police forces have already began to impose £100 fines and three penalty points for drivers caught passing less than 1.5m from bikes.
Police forces and learner drivers will receive extra training to ensure cyclists are kept safe on roads.
Motorists who fail to give cyclists at least 1.5 metres space now face a range of sanctions, these include:
- Fines of £100
- Three penalty points on their license
