Increase in reports of domestic abuse during football tournaments

Domestic violence often increases during major football tournaments – particularly when England loses.

Figures obtained from police forces across England under the Freedom of Information Act show that when England lost 4-1 to Germany in the World Cup there were 724 new cases of domestic violence reported after the match.

Research also shows that when local teams lose games there is an increase in reports in that specific area and studies show that reports of domestic abuse increase by as much as 75% across Leicestershire on match days.

Any form of domestic abuse whether emotional or physical is a criminal offence and could lead to a prison sentence if prosecuted.

Cases of domestic violence are always taken very seriously by the police and when there are children in the home social services will also be notified which could also lead to care proceedings depending on the seriousness of the matter.
